It seems like yesterday, passengers of the low-cost airlines had an opportunity to carry a hand luggage without any restrictions: in addition to outwear and laptop bags, there was an opportunity to take on the board a small suitcase with clothes and souvenirs. However, since November 1 some popular airlines have changed the rules for the hand luggage, unfortunately, not in travelers favor.
Wizz Air
How it used to be: 2 items could be carried on the board for free – size of which could not exceed 40х30х18 cm or 1 item smaller than 55х40х23 cm in luggage compartment.
How it is now: 1 item can be carried on the board for free. The size of hand luggage should be less than 40х30х20 cm.
When the new rules will be implemented: On October 10, the Hungarian lowcoster Wizz Air announced that the new hand luggage rules will be implemented on November 1. For those who managed to buy tickets until October 10, the airline will make an exception and will allow the additional hand luggage and a small bag (up to 10 kg).
What does this mean: there is a possibility to take on board either a handbag, or a bag with laptop, or a small backpack. If a girl is travelling with a small handbag, this is going to be her only item of hand luggage.
For those travelling with a baby there is an opportunity to take on board either 1 baby chair on wheels, or 1 baby carriage, or 1 car seat.
Other possible options: If your things don`t fit into one bag you will be offered to pay for an extra hand luggage (from 8 euros per bag up to 10 kg) and to check the luggage in. In order not to overpay, Wizz Air offers to order Wizz Priority when booking online (from 5 euros) and take the second bag on board with you.
UIA
How it used to be: 1 bag up to 7 kg, the size of which did not exceed 55x40x20 cm, as well as an additional female (male) bag, or a camera, or a press for reading on the board.
How it is now: 1 item of hand luggage, the weight of which does not exceed 7 kg and the size of 55x40x20 cm can be carried on the board for free.
When the new rules will be implemented: UIA states that all tickets purchased after November 1 with the date of departure from January 15, 2019 and later fall under the new rules.
What does this mean: you have to pack all of your staff into one hand luggage bag, including duty free purchases. That's why you should take care about an additional space in your hand luggage before flight - only the inside of the bag can be taken on board free of charge.
For those travelling with a baby there is an opportunity to take 1 additional bag with child's things and meal on board. The size of such bag can not exceed 55x40x20 cm and the weight must be less than 5 kg.
Other possible options: if you check in your luggage, you will have an opportunity to take on board a bag with a weight up to 5 kg and the size less than 40x30x10 cm. Business class passengers can carry 2 items of hand luggage (up to 12 kg and 5 kg), depending on the flight distance. If your fare does not include a second bag, you will have to pay 15 euros for excess baggage.
Ryanair
How it used to be: 1 item of hand luggage with up to 10 kg weight and the size up to 55x40x20 cm, as well as 1 personal item, the size of which did not exceed 35x20x20 cm.
How it is now: 1 small bag (weight not specified) with size less than 40x20x25 cm.
When the new rules will be implemented: The changes will affect the tickets purchased after August 31 with the departure date from November 1 and later.
What does this mean: if the carry on exceeds the specified dimensions, its transportation may either be denied or the passengers will be offered to pay 50 euros. Ryanair is asking passengers to check the size of hand luggage at the check-in counter and to keep in mind that the size of the bag can be checked again before boarding.
For those travelling with a baby one additional bag, as well as a baby carriage or a car seat are allowed on the board free of charge.
Other possible options: the option of travelling with additional baggage can be bought for 8 euros online or for for 10 euros directly at the airport. But note that the second bag still have to be checked in. Passengers who purchase Priority Boarding fares can take 2 bags (with a size up to 55x40x20cm and 40x20x25cm). Priority Boarding can be useful for those who want to save some money. It gives more advantages, and costs only 6 euros.
