Every summer in Sonkajärvi a contest among men is held. A man should carry his wife or girlfriend on his shoulders and overcome various obstacles. Competitors have to wade through gravel, sand and water, and the winner receives as a gift as much beer as his "burden" weighs.

La Tomatina festival

On the last Wednesday of every August in the suburbs of Valencia, people arrange real tomato battles. Tomato battles gather up to 140 thousand participants, who throw at each other about 100 tons of fresh tomatoes. From the start of the festival, the center of the city is turning into a continuous tomato mash. So that no one is seriously hurt, before throwing a tomato must be squashed. At the end of the festival, the cleaning process begins: local residents water the guests with hoses, and fire trucks wash off the traces of battles from streets and buildings.
